Background of the Study
The destruction of cultural heritage is one of the severe consequences of armed conflicts. Cultural heritage, including historical sites, monuments, and artifacts, represents a community’s identity, history, and values. In conflict zones, these symbols of heritage are often targeted as part of the broader strategy to undermine the social fabric of communities and erase collective memories. Gwoza, a Local Government Area (LGA) in Borno State, has experienced significant destruction of its cultural heritage due to the insurgency and violence perpetrated by Boko Haram.
The deliberate targeting of cultural sites and artifacts has not only led to the loss of invaluable heritage but also contributed to the psychological trauma of the local population. Post-conflict recovery in such areas is further complicated by the inability to restore lost cultural symbols, which serve as vital tools for healing, reconciliation, and rebuilding trust among displaced populations. This study aims to explore the impact of cultural heritage destruction on the post-conflict recovery process in Gwoza LGA, focusing on the socio-economic and psychological consequences for the community and the challenges involved in the recovery of cultural heritage.
Statement of the Problem
In the aftermath of armed conflicts, the destruction of cultural heritage poses significant challenges to post-conflict recovery. In Gwoza LGA, the damage to cultural symbols has hampered efforts at reconciliation, healing, and community rebuilding. The loss of heritage has left a vacuum in the identity of the community, contributing to dislocation and emotional distress. Moreover, the inability to restore these cultural markers further delays the process of reconstruction. This study will investigate the extent of cultural heritage destruction in Gwoza and assess how it has affected the community’s recovery efforts, both socially and economically.
